Learning from city recovery in Europe and the United States
A new study from Joseph Rowntree Foundation investigates why cities decline, how they recover and how low-income communities within them fare under the impact of dramatic changes.
The study focuses on the fortunes of seven European cities – Sheffield and Belfast in the UK; Bremen and Leipzig in Germany; Torino, Italy; Saint-Étienne, France; and Bilbao, Spain.
'Although cities in Europe and the US face urgent pressures – including the need to reduce radically their reliance on fossil fuels – their underused spaces, existing infrastructure, knowledge and skills base, and diverse populations open up new opportunities for urban progress and environmental protection.'
JRF publish Contemporary Social Evils
A hundred years after its philanthropist founder identified poverty, alcohol, drugs and gambling among the social evils of his time, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation initiated a major consultation among leading thinkers, activists and commentators, as well as the wider public.
London's Poverty Profile is the first independent report to bring together such a wide range of indicators measuring poverty, inequality and social exclusion in the capital. London has the highest rates of poverty and inequality of any region in the country according to new research from the City Parochial Foundation and the New Policy Institute.
The annual conference of the British and Irish Association for Practical Theology will be exploring the contribution of Practical Theology to public affairs. As the conference title suggests, the dialogical method intrinsic to Practical Theology will be a major emphasis. The keynote speakers will be Elaine Graham, Stephen Lowe, Frances Ward, Wahida Shaffi, Peter Robinson and Bob Langley.
